What is it like to do an Internship in Tokyo?

皆さん、こんにちは。タイのバンコク出身のマイケルです。（株）トゥモローでインターンシップをはじめて約2ヵ月経ちました。
自分自身、何かにチャレンジしたいと思い、高校卒業後イギリスの大学に入学しました。約6年間イギリスに滞在し、その間ににほんじんのりゅうがくたちとともだちになりました日本人留学生の友達ができました。彼らとコミュニケーションをとるため、日本語に興味を持ち、勉強することが趣味になりました。イギリスの大学院を卒業した後、日本に働きに行くなんてまったく考えていませんでしたが、今日本で満員電車に乗ったり、美味しいファミリーマートのチキンを食べたりして、東京に住んでいます。日本の住み心地はどうでしょうか？日本の生活は外国人の期待通りでしょうか？私のインターン生活をここでご紹介したいと思います！
Hi everyone, Michael here. I have been interning here at Tomorrow Inc. for the past two months. But before I talk about that, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born and raised in a relatively rural area of the metropolis that is Bangkok, Thailand. Although I spent most of my early years in Thailand, after finishing my secondary education (high school), I decided to challenge myself and moved to the UK in pursue of higher education. That was where I have been until recently. During my time in the UK, I had the chance to meet and befriend a group of Japanese exchange students which in turn inspired me to start learning Japanese as a hobby. Truthfully, I have never thought that I would end up actually moving to and working in Tokyo and yet after finishing my degree in the UK, here I am, taking an overly crowded train every morning to commute to work and spending way too much money on Family Mart’s delectable selection of fried chicken. So, what is it really like to work here in Tokyo as a foreigner? Is it anything like the media would have you believe? Well, read on and you’ll find out!

So, what is it like living in Tokyo?
私にとって、東京の生活はエキサイティングです。東京に来る前、色んな国、色んな町に住みましたが、東京の生活は、他の所より、ペースが速いです。来てすぐはその速いペースに馴染めず、大変なチャレンジでしたが、少しずつ毎日頑張りながら、慣れていきました。その他には、毎日美味しい日本食を食べられて、きれいな景色の観光スポットへ行けました。しかし、自分にとって東京の一番良いところはここで出会った人たちだと思います。
東京は日本の中心地だけではなく、世界の財政の中心地や観光地の一つなので、色んな国からの多くの人が集まります。そこで、毎日色んな国際イベントがあり、東京の便利な公共交通機関のおかげで、簡単にたくさんのイベントに参加できて、たくさんの面白い人とネットワーキングができました。日本人だけではなく、出身国関係なく新しい人、面白い人と出会うのに、東京は世界一の場所だと思います。
Living in Tokyo has been exhilarating. Life here runs at a much faster pace than what I am used to in the UK and Thailand and while it is certainly a challenge to cope with this new pace, I am also learning a lot along the way. Throughout my time here, although I found that while the foods are certainly delicious, and the sights are certainly spectacular, the main aspect of Tokyo that I enjoyed the most is actually the people you can meet here, Japanese and foreigners alike. As the financial and entertainment capital of Japan, Tokyo draws not only Japanese jobseekers and big businesses, but also travelers and other business-minded people from across the globe. To accommodate these people, there is always something going on in the city be it day or night, a snowy Sunday morning or a rainy Wednesday night. These events can range from a business networking event to an IT seminar to the more casual language exchange and walking tour events. If you want to meet new and interesting people, there is no better place in the world to do so than in Tokyo!
人との出会い以外に、私が東京で好きなことのもう一つは、素敵な公園です。東京の公園は、西洋の公園より平和な雰囲気があります。公園ではお花や植物がたくさんあります。また、公園はたくさんの高層ビルや線路、幹線道路などに囲まれているのに、公園の中には静かで疲れが癒されます。さらに公園からは、都会と自然というユニークで対照的な景色を見ることができます。
Beyond meeting people, the other thing I really enjoy doing is walking around and taking in the greeneries that can be found littered across the heart of Tokyo. These parks are often surrounded by a literal forest of skyscrapers, train tracks, and busy roads, but offer a much-needed release from the stress of the city life. Often being arranged in a Japanese style and filled with oriental blossoms, the atmosphere within these parks is much calmer than in their Western counterpart, Central Park and the likes, painting a contrasting yet oddly compelling picture of scenic nature against an ultra-urban backdrop.

トゥモローで働くのは難しいですが、とてもやりがいがあります。大学の専攻はエンジニアと経営学だったので、色々な作業に取り組みました。
一週間かけてトゥモローのサイトのデータ分析をしたり、その次の週には新しいサービスのためのテンプレートデサインを作成したりしました。それだけでなく、一日Study inサイトの内容を作ったり、次の日は海外営業メールを送ったりしました。また、トゥモローのCEO天野さんと一緒にお客さんと英語と日本語での会議に参加した機会があり、色んな日本の会社や業界の洞察力が学べました。トゥモローのオフィスは国際オフィスですから、天野さん以外、同僚は色んな国からの人です。それなのに、オフィスでのコミュニケーションは日本語で行います。あまり日本語が話せない私にとって、大きなチャレンジでしたが、毎日たくさん日本語の練習ができて良かったです。
Working at Tomorrow Inc. has been a unique and rewarding experience. Having background in both engineering and business management, I was tasked with a wide variety of projects that changes from week to week, or some time day to day. I could be data mining and analyzing for the company website one day and designing the user interface for new website the next. I was also tasked to create contents for the Study In series websites as well as try my hands-on sales through contacting potential clients through email. Moreover, I had rare opportunities to accompany Amano-san, the CEO, to various Japanese and English business meeting, having unique first-hand insights into both the industry and how companies in Japan operate. Although most of these works are mainly done in English, day to day communication is often done in Japanese which, given my limited command of the language, is both a challenge and a much-needed opportunity to really practice.
結論として、東京に住んでいるこの2カ月の経験はとっても良かったです。もっと長くこの素敵で、賑やかな東京に住めないのは残念です。日本に来る前、東京でしたいことの長いリストを作りました。今まで頑張ってたくさん実現させましたが、到着してからそのリストは短くなるのではなく、さらに長くなりました！たった2ヵ月東京に住んだだけで日本の生活や文化などだけではなく、自分自身のことも学べ、成長できました。
しかし、やっぱり絶対忘れられないことは、ここで出会った人たちです。トゥモローの素晴らしい同僚の皆さんや、ここでできた新しい友達のみなさんに対して感謝しています。みなさんと一緒に過ごした時間を大切にし、これからの宝物になります。帰国する日が近づいていますが、まだ3週間あるので、最後まで続いて頑張りたいと思います！
All in all, my only regret is that the time I have at Tomorrow and in this fascinating city is so short that I could not do more. It still felt like yesterday when I got off the plane and set foot on this country and here I am looking back nearly two and a half months later with a bucket list that keeps on becoming longer and longer. It also amazes me how much this city and its break-neck lifestyle changed me in two short months and how much I learnt about work, life, people, and even about myself. Most of all however, it is the people that I have met here, both the amazing people at Tomorrow and the countless strangers, many of whom I doubtlessly consider lifelong friends, that I will never forget. With over two third of time here gone, the time to say goodbye is surely fast approaching. But even with less than three short weeks that I have left, I plan on doing and learning as much as I can! It has been great thus far and I have no doubt it will only get better from here!
